I had plans for my writing day. None of those plans included writing anything for this blog. Yet, I saved draft after draft as the words flowed like water.
I intended to do another type of writing. I had an outline ready and just needed to fill in the words. Simple.
But as I tried to write, only dead, lifeless words came.
Multiple times I stopped, took a break, and came back. Maybe a little rest or changing activity would spark the flame.
Yet each time I sat down to write, something just wasn’t right.
Finally I had to ask myself, “Is God in this?”
The answer was no.
So I stopped.
The simple fact is that I don’t want to write words of my own. If He isn’t flowing through me then I have nothing worthwhile to say.
Writing can be blocked for numerous reasons. Fatigue. Stress. Panic. Being out of practice. But we can’t rule out another factor—the God factor. Maybe God simply doesn’t want us writing this particular piece at this time, or at all.
That doesn’t mean that every time the writing gets a little hard, God isn’t involved. It doesn’t mean that whenever we have writer’s block He’s shut down the well of inspiration.
This is different. It’s a knowing deep down on the inside that something isn’t right, that God has left the building.
It may mean that we humbly admit that what we’re writing didn’t originate from Him. It can also be a simpler thing. Maybe the timing isn’t right today. Maybe we need to pray and get clarity on it. Maybe other things truly do need to be tended to and the writing must wait.
Whatever the cause, do yourself a favor. Stop and address it. Take it straight to the foot of the cross and humbly ask, “God, are you in this?”

This is such great advice. Actually it's more than just advice, it's a great motto or standard to go by isn't it?
Thanks for the much needed reminder!
Hi Bonita,
What sage advice. It sometimes takes me a little bit of head-banging time, but eventually I figure out when God isn't in it. LOL
And what a reward you got when you wrote what you were supposed to! May His words always flow freely from our pens and hearts.
Hugs to you, sweet friend!
Thank you Bonita for this post and the way your posts are such a source of rich encouragement. Perhaps it wasn't flowing because God wanted you to write on that specific topic. He always has a plan. ~ Abby
Thank you, Bonita. Truly. That's a very good reminder for me, and one I need a lot.
Lord bless :]
