“A professional writer is an amateur who didn’t quit.” Richard Bach

This is the quote that I keep ever in front of me on my office desk. It’s a reminder to simply keep writing and never give up on my dreams.
Every writer is an amateur at first.
No writer is born a professional.
It takes time, practice, persistence, and patience.
If you’re reading this or if you have read this series, you are well on your way to becoming a professional writer. You are taking time to learn more about your craft.
Now continue to practice it.
That’s how you become a professional writer.
It’s not chance or luck.
You just have to stick with it.
That’s all.

“It took me fifteen years to discover I had no talent for writing, but I couldn’t give it up because by that time I was too famous.” Robert Benchley

Talent is no longer a prerequisite for becoming a famous author. I find that very sad, but it’s the way of the world.
But that’s not the greatest trouble when it comes to writing talent.
The biggest problem is that so many great writers don’t believe in their own ability.
So they do nothing.
I’m convinced that if more people attempted to get their writing published, we would soon discover that most of what is out there now is rubbish and true treasures would be found.
Talent is not the only measure of writing success.
What you choose to do with it is the other half of the equation.

Just don’t quit!
That’s the message.
We learn something from every experience we encounter, whether success or failure.
Failure should never be the stop sign that makes us quit writing.
Failure is only an unsuccessful success.
Keep writing. . . no matter what.

It’s wise to remember that our job is to write. We are to put in writing the words we are given. That is all.
What happens to our writing once we’ve obeyed is up to God.
Maybe it will be published and affect millions of lives.
Maybe it will be published and affect a few key people.
Maybe it’s just for us.
It is not for us to take on the care of what happens once a work leaves our hands. It’s not for us to worry whether it is received with accolades or criticism.
Our only job is to obey and write.
“Any man who keeps working is not a failure. He may not be a great writer, but if he applies the old-fashioned virtues of hard, constant labor, he’ll eventually make some kind of career of himself as a writer.” Ray Bradbury

The same principle applies to anything. If you stay with it and consistently practice, you can succeed at anything.
You may never be a best-selling author, but you can make writing your career.
Just as you would learn any other trade or skilled job, you can learn to write and be published.
The question is- Are you willing to stick with it until you succeed?

“An original writer is not one who imitates nobody, but one whom nobody can imitate.” Francois-Rene, Vicomte de Chateaubriand

The best way to be a writer no one can imitate is to simply be yourself. You are the only you.
It’s true that some writers have a unique style all their own that clearly sets them apart in a way that other writers can’t imitate. But you don’t have to have an off-the-wall style to be different.
Nobody says things the same way you do. Nobody has the same body of knowledge or the same life experiences. No one else sees life through your pair of eyes.
Learn from the greats, but in your writing be yourself.

Something about having bills due, needing food on the table, and a roof over our head, chases writer’s block away.
I’m sure that if every writer required an income from writing and had no other source of money, writer’s block would be but a myth.
We do what we have to do when we have to do it.
If writing is our paycheck, we learn to overcome all obstacles, including writer’s block.
If it’s a hobby or isn’t paying the bills, we are free to throw writer’s block around as an excuse for not doing what needs to be done.
Something to think about the next time you’re tempted to claim you can’t write.

“All writing is difficult. The most you can hope for is a day when it goes reasonably easily. Plumbers don’t get plumber’s block, and doctors don’t get doctor’s block; why should writers be the only profession that gives a special name to the difficulty of working, and then expects sympathy for it?” Philip Pullman

The main point here is that you do what you have to do.
If you’re a writer, you write. You don’t make excuses for not writing. You don’t wait on the muse. You don’t get blocked. You just write.
That said, I do think writing is different than plumbing or working in the medical field. I spent 13 years as a nurse and it’s a much more concrete type of work than writing. You do what’s in front of you, but you don’t have to use your imagination much or make your words flow, or be creative when you’re ultra tired. You just grab a cup of coffee and continue on, clear-headed or not.
Writing requires a great deal more concentration using the creative parts of the brain. Those parts can get clogged in a way that a plumber can’t fix.
But writer’s block shouldn’t be an excuse for not doing our job.
“Easy reading is damn hard writing.” Nathaniel Hawthorne

Those books we all love, the ones that we can hardly put down because they are so compelling, those are the ones that didn’t come easy for the writer.
If we become totally engrossed to the point that we feel as though we are the character experiencing everything that’s happening, it’s because a skillful writer labored hours to take us there.
The writing that is so natural that it absorbs us into it—that’s the stuff that drew sweat and blood from the writer. It’s the reason he has high blood pressure and can’t sleep at night.
Writing isn’t easy.
Writing well is just plain hard.
“You can never correct your work well until you have forgotten it.” Voltaire

This is so true!
One of the best things you can do for your writing is to write it and then put aside for a while- days, weeks, months even.
This will break all of the emotional ties you have to your work.
When you read it again, you will be able to do so with a critical eye so you can slash and dice and delete until you have something worth publishing.
Do yourself a favor. Once you write something, break up with it for a while. When you return to it the relationship will be different and you will be the critic of your words, not their intimate lover.
“A writer needs three things, experience, observation, and imagination, any two of which , at times any one of which, can supply the lack of the others.” William Faulkner

A writer needs experience, to live a little, experience new things, interact with life. This keeps writing from being flat and dull. Live a little and let your writing do the same.
A writer needs observation- the ability to see what others don’t. A writer will notice subtle nuances, body language, tone and expression, human quirks, the sound of a raindrop hitting a puddle, the roughness of the paper beneath the hand, the faint scent of garlic on the fingers, the glint of flirtation in the eye.
A writer needs imagination- the ability to conjure what is lacking. In a way a writer is an exaggerator, taking the common and making it uncommon, unique, like it’s never been before.
These are the tools in a writer’s toolbox.
“Don’t tell me the moon is shining, show me the glint of light on broken glass.” Anton Chekov

See, hear, taste, touch, feel.
Let your reader experience it with you.
One of the most common mistakes I find with rookie writers is telling instead of showing.
Telling is boring.
“She got excited!”
Showing brings everything to life.
“She jumped up and down squealing with delight!”
Telling is walking through life without interacting.
Showing is skipping through life inhaling the pleasing fragrance of gardenia with sunshine warming your face.
Bring the senses into play.
Let your characters interact with their world using their senses.
If you, the writer, don’t feel the emotions in your work, no one else will either.
Write what moves you.
If you can’t move yourself, you can’t move your reader.
Write from that place deep within, where all the feelings reside.
Go to that secret place that you don’t let anyone in and see what you find there.
Then take the reader there with you.
This reminds me so much of the feedback editors give.
“Your submission would be good, except that it isn’t.”
Now, that’s helpful!
Sometimes you just have to laugh and not take yourself or this writing business too seriously.

This is me every time I start a huge project.
It takes forever to get it off the ground. I do all the easy stuff first and avoid the actual writing process like the Black Plague.
I don’t think I’m alone.
Writing is scary business, especially when it involves a big project like a book. It was easier before I knew how much work is involved. I’m not so green anymore and I remember the blood, sweat, and tears it takes to flesh out words by the thousands.
It takes a while to convince myself that it’s really worth it to go through all that angst and agony again.
But I always do.
Just as soon as I finish the page numbers.

“ The profession of book writing makes horse racing seem like a solid, stable business.” John Steinbeck

The world of writing books has so many unknowns.
Will I finish it?
Will it get published?
Will I be a one book wonder?
Will the critics like it?
What will I be paid?
Will it sell?
How can I ever write another one?
Can I even do this?
Surely, God, you must have the wrong person.
Shall we say it’s a walk of faith from start to finish?
It’s true.
Many of us write things only to let them sit at home unpublished.
As I type these words I’m surrounded by notebooks full of my unpublished work and I know of at least two full books I have on a flash drive collecting electronic dust.
What keeps us from submitting our work?
Fear.
Procrastination.
Unbelief.
Laziness.
Distraction.
Lack of knowledge.
Life.
It’s time we pulled those potential bestsellers off the shelf and sent them to someone.
I’m in, are you?

Isn’t that the truth?
Writing is wonderful, but having written already is even better.
I love the feeling I have when I’ve just completed a major writing project. I’m spent, emptied, yet satisfied. I feel accomplished, yet light.
Even on days when I haven’t written anything big, I’ve just written anything at all, I still feel like I’ve put in a good day’s work.
To know that I have written is enough.
Talented or not, you must practice writing in order to write well.
It’s a learning process.
It takes time.
Even if you become a bestselling writer with years of publishing experience under your belt, you should be ever learning.
And none of us will ever learn it all.

“Write as often as possible, not with the idea at once of getting into print, but as if you were learning an instrument.” J.B. Priestley

It always amazes me how many people suddenly get a thought to write a book and assume it will be easy to get it published.
While everyone understands that it takes years to learn a trade, a craft, or a skill, a disconnect occurs when it comes to writing. Why would anyone on the planet assume that writing comes easily or without practice?
Writing is a fine art.
Let me repeat that. Writing is an art form, one that must be learned and mastered.
It takes practices. Again and again and again and again.
But those who will faithfully practice will one day be rewarded by the sound of their own written words strung together in harmony.
Writing improves with practice.
“You don’t write because you want to say something, you write because you have something to say.” F. Scott Fitzgerald

Writing is everywhere—tree trunks, bathroom stalls, bridges and overpasses, graffiti on city walls. Everybody wants to say something.
But do they really have something to say?
Does it really matter that Jack loves Monica? Does everyone really want to know that you can call Sherry for a good time? Do gangs have to stamp their colorful brands to claim their turf?
Are these true messages or mere words?
The reason you write isn’t to be heard. The reason you write is because you have a message worth hearing.
You don’t write to prove your worth or make yourself known. You don’t write to impress. You write because you have a fire in your bones, a message that fills you up completely and spills over into typed words.
“I have written because it fulfilled me. . . I did it for the buzz. I did it for the joy of the thing. And if you can do it for joy, you can do it forever.” Stephen King, “On Writing”

When is the last time you wrote simply for the joy of it?
When is the last time you forgot about what your publisher wanted, what your audience wanted, and what your inner English teacher was saying?
When is the last time you poured forth words simply because you wanted to write them?
Your best writing will be that which brings you the most joy.
Stephen King is successful not only because he is a master of writing, but because he takes great delight in the act of typing words on paper.
It’s his joy.
Is it yours?
I couldn’t agree more!
For the writer, writing is play.
It’s art.
And it’s work.
All combined into one.
Granted, at times it feels like a giant leech draining every last word out of us, but once a big writing project is complete, we go right back to it.
It’s our drug, our therapy.
Admit it. Writing is fun.

Have you lost your desire to write?
Start writing again.
It’s the only way to truly woo the desire back again.
If you’ll just start typing a few words, you’ll be surprised at how quickly the joy and delight comes back.
The more you write, the more you want to write.
“There is no perfect time to write. There is only now.” Barbara Kingsolver

Don’t we dream of the day when we’ll have hours and hours to do nothing but write? But life keeps getting in the way!
If we keep putting off writing until the stars align perfectly and every detail of life is in order, we’ll never write at all.
A writer’s clock really only has one time on it- NOW!
Procrastination and the desire for perfection are enemies of a writer.
Waiting will keep us from ever writing because in case you hadn’t noticed the hour glass of our lives eventually does run out of sand.
If you are having trouble implementing writing now, you might enjoy this article, Make Time to Write.
By the way, I’m not preaching what I don’t live. As I type these words, my house is torn apart from a water leak and has been this way for nearly a month. I didn’t have a useable kitchen for two weeks. I still don’t have flooring. And I have a long list of household remodeling projects to do while I’m waiting for my floors. But I’m still managing to write.
